Carbon neutrality claim
What does ‘carbon neutral’ mean, and how did bematrix use this term in Project C! ?
In our earlier Project C! communications, we used the phrase “Become carbon neutral in 2026”. The concrete ambition behind this wording was our near term target under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi): to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2% by 2026 compared with 2019. These cover direct emissions from our operations and indirect emissions from purchased energy. As documented in our 2025 Sustainability Report, we had already achieved this reduction target in 2024.
The term “carbon neutral” did not accurately describe this target. Achieving an emission reduction target does not mean achieving carbon neutrality, and this particular target did not cover Scope 3 emissions across our value chain. We no longer use “carbon neutral” to describe bematrix, our products or this ambition. Instead, we communicate our specific emission reduction targets and measured progress.
